Choosing a House Plan

  • What is the focal room of your new home? Where will you, family, and friends spend the most time?
  • Is your entertaining style formal or informal? Would you prefer an open plan with a large family room, or a more formal arrangement with separate living/dining rooms?
  • Are there any special considerations? (accessibility for someone using walker or wheelchair)
  • Consider the location of master bedroom, and total number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Do you want your laundry area near the bedrooms for practicality?
  • Consider possible flex space, one room serving two purposes, or a room to be finished later for a special need — for example, room over garage or walk-out basement to be used as games room for teens, music room, craft or exercise area.
  • Allow for ample storage space to accommodate the Canadian lifestyle: large closets, bench and hooks at back entranceway, a place for seasonal sports equipment and extra outdoor clothing, and a good-sized closet near front entranceway (if you entertain frequently)
  • Consider traffic flow, furniture placement options, and the overall style statement you wish to make.
  • Will your home be marketable to future buyers should you choose to sell?
